Stability and versions
The syntax of STXT is stable, with no changes planned.
A living language, with a stable core
STXT has evolved. Today the core is stable and no incompatible changes are expected. Schemas and templates are stable too, but an incompatible change is not ruled out.
For this reason, instead of a numbering, a descriptive system with two variables has been established:
- Date in force: last modification of the document
- Status: indicates the level of stability
| Status | Level of stability |
|---|---|
| Genesis | Under construction. Anything may change. |
| Aurora | Usable. Few changes are expected. An incompatible change is announced. |
| Zenith | Stable. There should be no incompatible change. Whatever is added is always compatible with what exists. |
| Twilight | Marked as obsolete, with no changes except errata. |
The status only moves forward, in the order above.

A bit of history
STXT-SPEC and STXT-SCHEMA-SPEC are born in the spring of 2013. Development is active until January 2014, and stays frozen almost until 2025.
STXT-TEMPLATE-SPEC is born in mid-2025. By the end of 2025 the three are already usable.
STXT-DISCOVERY-SPEC is born on 2 August 2026, and STXT-TREE-SPEC on 9 August 2026.
On 31 August 2026 version 1.0 of the whole ecosystem is published, with the syntax and the tree already stable.
On 7 September 2026 version numbers are replaced by date and status.
